OFFICE
This position is with the Tennessee Department of Audit which, under the direction of the Comptroller of the Treasury, is responsible for the audit of state and local government entities. As a post-audit agency, the department, through its component divisions, examines the books and records of an entity and determines the entity's compliance with applicable statutes, rules and regulations. The department is comparable to an independent public accounting firm in the business sector, because as a legislative organization it is independent of the audited entity.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs investigative and/or audit work involving allegations of fraud, waste or abuse of public funds or property. Interviews pertinent individuals, including subjects of the investigation; issues miranda warnings when appropriate; obtains affidavits and written statements. Develops leads for further investigative effort. Reviews relevant documentation and other evidentiary matter and prepares necessary exhibits. Works with other enforcement agencies and district attorneys general. Provides testimony as required. Prepares investigative working papers in appropriate format, presenting the basis for conclusion reached. Writes investigative findings and recommendations. Assists higher level investigators in more difficult aspects of investigation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS
Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in accounting or business administration with a minimum of twenty-four semester hours in accounting, or with a degree in criminal justice, or with and advanced degree in a field related to business, accounting, law or public administration. The above qualifications express the minimum standards of education and experience of an applicant for this class, Other combinations of education and experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify an applicant for consideration.
Knowledge and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of accounting theory and practices and auditing procedures. Ability to deal tactfully with the public and co-workers; to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; and to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly.
TRAVEL
Travel is required with the percentage varying by the audit division and audit assignment.
