Comptroller Introduces Certified Municipal Finance Officer Program

The Municipal Finance Officer Certification and Education Act of 2007 (Chapter 576, Public Acts of 2007) requires your municipality to have a chief financial officer, who is either a Certified Municipal Finance Officer (CMFO), or exempted from testing and attending classes for the certification, or a qualified contractor. The Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) will administer the educational program and testing to achieve the CMFO designation. The Act designates the Comptroller’s Office as the certification authority.

MTAS is the source for CMFO applications for certification or exemption from certification testing and classes. All questions you have regarding this program need to be directed to your municipality’s MTAS Management or Finance Consultant.
